The following are some Frequently Asked Questions in regard to the C.M.A. National Tournament. Click on the orange down arrow to reveal the answers.
Q. What is C.M.A.?
A. Combined Martial Arts (C.M.A.) is an original Korean Martial Art (Jonghap Musul) with its origins dating back well over 2000 years. As with all traditional martial arts it was developed primarily for self defence and self improvement. It encompasses aspects of kicking, punching and grappling as incorporated in the more contemporary arts such as Taekwondo, Karate and Hapkido, but also meditation and healing arts which are often outside the bounds of modern martial arts.
Q. What is Tournament and why should I enter?
A. The Tournament is a test of agility, fitness and skill and a chance for our students to demonstrate their technique in a safe, controlled environment. More importantly it builds self confidence and provides as an important lesson that the skills learnt at C.M.A. have an effect and should only ever be used in self defence.
Q. When is Tournament and where is it held?
A. This year the C.M.A. National Tournament, will be held on Saturday 25th June at the Allan Brewster Recreation Centre in Papatoetoe, Auckland.
Q. How does the Tournament work?
A. The C.M.A. National Tournament is open to C.M.A. students only, the Tournament format consists of four divisions, ranging from the smallest competitors (5-7 year olds) through to the biggest (open age). All contestants are fully protected from injury with head gear, mouth guard as well as chest, groin, shin and forearm guards. Contestants look to score points against each other in two rounds of 90 seconds controlled by a referee and scored by judges.
Q. How big is the National Tournament?
A. This year the event will be limited to 128 students in the four divisions. If you would like to enter do so as soon as possible or you risk missing out a place.
Q. What are the rules, what am I allowed to do, what am I not allowed to do?
A. The Tournament rules can be downloaded from the Student Zone Website, if you have any questions about these rules please ask your Club Instructor.
Q. How do I enter and what is the entry fee?
A. To enter you can download a Tournament Information Newsletter and Application Form from the C.M.A. website or get one from your Club Instructor. The Application Form needs to be returned to your Club Instructor or C.M.A. HQ along with the entry fee by Friday 17th June. As entries are limited enter now or you may miss out. The entry fee is $65, along with entry into the Tournament draw each contestant also receives a Contestant Pack and one Tournament ticket.
Q. My son/daughter is not sure about competing in this year Tournament, what should I do?
A. If you or your son/daughter are unsure about participating in this years tournament talk to you Club Instructor. The tournament is a chance for our students to demonstrate their technique in a safe, controlled environment. More importantly it will help to overcome other fears, builds self confidence and provides as an important lesson that the skills learnt at C.M.A. have an effect and should only ever be used in self defence. There is only one winner in each division, however all are richer for the experience and even those eliminated in the first round will take home found memories and a motivation to train harder.
The Tournament Workshops offer the students an oppurtunity to go through some of the key elements of the tournament. I encourage all students to attend the tournament even if they aren't competing this year to support other members from their club and to experience tournament first hand; often this is enough of a spur to make them want to compete the following year.
